Art Newsletter: First Cycle 2018-2019

Dear Parents and Friends to the Arts at FISD,

Welcome to the first digital art newsletter for Flatonia Independent School District. It is so exciting to finally digitize. With this blog, information will be able to get out to you more quickly, more frequently, and your children's artwork will be better featured. And did you notice? Everything is in COLOR! Say goodbye to the days of newsletters using black and white photography the size of your thumbnail!

Students have started the 2018-2019 school year with a bang, and our art department has already been a workshop of energy. Students will be creating art this year around two major themes: self and growth. That being said, we plan to make masterpieces that explore who we are, what our interests are, and create projects that will nurture growth around creativity and art-making skills.

If you would like to be more involved in your child's art-making education, then be sure to visit the FISD art blog regularly. To make it easy on yourself, sign up for the email list to get instant notification and stay up to date with what is happening in the art room. Share with your child your thoughts, and talk to them about their art. Ask them what their art is about or what they like the most about their art. Their confidence and productivity can sky-rocket with this type of parental engagement.

Below I will post a few photos from different projects students have been working on this past cycle. Browse through - maybe you will see some familiar faces or some familiar work. And, as I close, I thank you, as always, for your support of the FISD Art Department. Your child really does benefit from this content area.

Go Bulldogs!

Sincerely,
Ms. Demel

Taped Tile Designs:
August 2018 - Secondary Art
Objective: Students were to work in pairs to create a visually compelling design on a 12" x 12" floor tile using electrical tape.

Elementary Self-Portraits:
August/September/October 2018 - Elementary Art
Objective: This has been a fun project so far, using three elementary class sessions per grade level. After defining a self-portrait and discussing the art of Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo, students drew themselves from observation using mirrors. In the next two art sessions, students were given the time to develop their self-portrait using different types of art media. Some materials included were oil pastels, watercolor paint, bingo dot markers, water-based markers, crayon, soft pastels and charcoal. Students were encouraged to fill their whole space, including the background (negative space). Students also had to think of creative ways to incorporate the elements of art and principles of design to create strong art.

I am the person I know best.”

Czhilispiel T-Shirt Design:
August 2018 - Secondary Art
Objective: Students had to work independently to develop a strong graphic design to submit to the annual Flatonia Czhilispiel T-shirt design contest. Students were required to invent simple, yet strong designs using no more than two colors. Students also practiced creative lettering for this project.

Introducing Sculpture in the Art Room:
September 2018 - Secondary Art
Objective: Students were secretly told of an animal to sculpt, and then had to construct that animal to the best of their ability using dough and sculpting tools. The sculpting session lasted for only fifteen minutes. Then students had to guess who sculpted what and discussed, as a class, each sculpture's strengths.
